Sketchcrawl en Estepona

Este sábado volvimos a encontrarnos los amigos de USk Málaga, esta vez en Estepona, la bonita ciudad de la Costa del Sol occidental. Éramos 12, cuadernos en ristre.
Nuestra amiga Sarah Quijano, que es esteponera, nos tenía preparado un ameno recorrido por algunos de los rincones más interesantes del lugar; primero dibujamos en una placita recoleta del centro antiguo; tras la comida y los cafés, con el consabido intercambio de retratos, acabamos en el paseo marítimo a la caída de la tarde.

Last saturday, some friends from Urban Sketchers Málaga met again, this time in Estepona, a beautiful city in the western Costa del Sol. There were 12 of us, sketchbook in hand.
Our friend Sarah Quijano, that lives there, had a great sketchcrawl planned for us through her favourite places in the town; we started at a small, picturesque square at the old center; after lunch and a coffee (during which we sketched each other as usual) we ended the day in the promenade at sunset.
It was such a good time. Thank you, Sarah!

Captando la luz / capturing the light

La Plaza del Carbón es uno de los espacios urbanos más interesantes de la ciudad. Su carácter de encrucijada lo hace un lugar muy transitado, y los chaflanes curvos de sus edificios originan un juego de cornisas muy dinámico. Me gusta mucho la silueta que se recorta de esa forma contra el cielo, como bien saben aquellos amigos que han visitado Málaga cuaderno en mano.
Con ocasión de la reciente visita de Omar Jaramillo, de la que hablé recientemente, tuvimos la oportunidad de dibujar juntos allí.
Por su configuración, la plaza es un lugar ideal para contemplar cómo la incidencia de la luz sobre las fachadas va evolucionando a lo largo del día, enfatizando las oquedades de la arquitectura y de la propia trama urbana.
También el torrente humano que fluye a nivel de calle va cambiando con las horas...

Plaza del Carbón is one of the most interesting urban spaces of the city. Its character of crossroads makes it a busy place, and due to the curved chamfers of the buildings, its cornices play a very dynamic game. I really like how the silhouette is cut that way against the sky, as  friends who've been to Malaga, notebook in hand, know. 
On the occasion of the recent visit of Omar Jaramillo, of which I spoke recently, we had the opportunity to draw together there. Due to its configuration, the square is an ideal place to watch the effect of light on the facades evolving throughout the day, emphasizing the hollows of architecture and urban pattern. Also the human stream flowing at street level is changing with the hour of the day ...

Apuntes de la feria / sketches from the city festival

Como ya sabéis los amigos de este blog, la figura humana es uno de los aspectos del dibujo en los que más me queda por aprender. Si se trata de personas en movimiento, la situación empeora notablemente.
Con estas premisas, y dado que no soy muy feriante, al menos en el ferragosto que nos toca padecer, en lugar de bailar me propuse dibujar algo que representase las fiestas de agosto en Málaga.
Junto a una biznaga, elemento típico de estas fechas, retraté una panda de verdiales. Para los que no conozcáis los verdiales, es una manifestación del folklore autóctono, como se explica bien en el enlace de la wikipedia; su música y baile tienen ese raro sabor de lo auténtico, tan infrecuente hoy en día.
Ya me diréis qué os parece el resultado.

As you friends of this blog know, the human figure is one aspect of drawing in which I have more to learn. If it is moving people, the situation worsens considerably. With these premises, taking into account that these days the main festival of the city is held, and since I'm not a big fan of it, moreover in this heat we are enduring, instead of dancing I decided to draw something that represented the August festival in Malaga. Together with a biznaga, typical element of these dates, I also portrayed a panda de verdiales. For those who do not know, it is a manifestation of native folklore, as well explained in the wikipedia link, where music and dance have a flavor of authenticity, so rare today.

Unos días en la sierra / Short holidays at the mountains

La familia se merecía unos días de disfrute lejos de casa. Como el mar nos pilla cerca, la elección fue la Sierra de Cazorla, donde se puede disfrutar de excursiones campestres a la orilla de ríos de montaña y de conjuntos urbanos preciosos. Por razones logísticas sólo pude dibujar en los segundos...
El secreto es permanecer en remojo o bajo una buena sombra las horas de la tarde y aprovechar la mañana y especialmente el crepúsculo y la noche en los que sopla el aire serrano. Por poner un ejemplo, la vista de las ruinas de la iglesia inacabada de Santa María a la luz de la luna es absolutamente mágica.

The family deserved to enjoy a few days away from home. As we live by the sea, the choice was the Sierra de Cazorla, where you can enjoy picnics on the banks of mountain rivers and beautiful urban ensembles. For logistical reasons could only draw in the second ... The secret is to stay at the swimming pool, or under a good shade at the afternoon hours, and take in the morning and especially dusk and night, when the fresh air from the mountain blows.
The view from the ruins of the unfinished church of Santa Maria in the light of the moon is absolutely magical.

En la Alhambra

Cuando Omar Jaramillo me expuso en Lisboa sus planes para visitar la Alhambra decidí sumarme a la visita. Hace tiempo que quería recorrer la Fortaleza Roja cuaderno en mano. A pesar del calor pudimos hacer algunos dibujos, aunque no pudimos traernos un apunte del Patio de los Leones en condiciones, al encontrarlo lleno de andamios y sin su famosa fuente en el centro; hubo que conformarse con una vista del pórtico adyacente a la Sala de los Mocárabes. Pero la Alhambra da para mucho más, así que pude dibujar El Partal y la Puerta del Vino.
No quedé nada satisfecho del dibujo de El Partal. Sin embargo, y tras la experiencia del simposium de Urban Sketchers, me di cuenta de la importancia de componer adecuadamente los textos con las imágenes, lo que decidí aplicar en estas páginas. Creo que la composición de alguna manera redime en parte un mal dibujo.

When Omar Jaramillo told me while in Lisbon about his plans to visit the Alhambra, I decided to join the visit. I have wanted since long ago to visit the Red Fortress (that's what its name means in arabic) sketchbook in hand. Despite the heat we could do some drawings, but could not bring home a sketch from the Court of the Lions as it was sad  to find it full of scaffolding and without its famous fountain in the center, so I had to settle for a view of the porch adjacent to the Sala de los Mocárabes. But the Alhambra contains much more in it, so I could draw also El Partal and la Puerta del Vino. I was not satisfied at all with my  drawing of El Partal. However, after the experience of Urban Sketchers symposium, I realized the importance of properly compose pages with texts and sketches, so I decided to apply to these pages. I think that somehow the  composition redeems in part a bad picture.
